3 Reasons Parents Avoid Connecting with their Kids

A large majority of parents, by the time their kids are teenagers, have fallen into this mentality of “avoidance is the best solution.” Some play dumb, some turn a blind eye, and some leave.

Recently, I had a parent come up to me after a weekend event I was leading and ask, “How do you feel about applying the ‘If it ain’t broke, then don’t fix it’ principle to parenting teenagers because it’s seems to be working just fine for us.” Quickly I asked the dad, “what are you using to measure it’s success or failure?” He answered by saying, “Well, I’m not sure what the kids think, but my wife and I feel like now that they’re teenagers, they’re old enough to ask for something if they need to and we owe them their privacy.” As soon as he finished that sentence, it was as if he not only realized the danger in his philosophy, but that he knew how I was going to res.

So, I said, “What do your son and daughter think about your parenting philosophy?” Though he grinned, he answered me with, “I’ll ask them and email you their response.”

It’s impossible to be a THRIVING parent if you’ve not learned the skill of taking action…but not just “taking action,” but TAKING A PLANNED & CALCULATED ACTION AT JUST THE RIGHT TIME! We’ll call these parents ACTION PACKED!

American Idol, Shout to the Lord, and Ben Stiller’s F Bomb

As my wife and I sat watching the “American Idol Gives Back” episode just minutes ago, I turned to her following the Daughtry video, and asked, “Do you think it’s possible to go to Uganda to serve the people there, lower yourself the way Christ did, and then be able to come home NOT changed?”

The next thing we know, Ryan Seacrest is announcing the finale, and the song is “Shout to the Lord,” which is an older, yet very popular worship song among Christians. Honestly, it was beautiful. Sure, I could’ve done without the white suits and the non-stop step touch dancing, but the song was beautiful! As we watched the contestants sing with such passion, it seemed that many of them had a face of adoration and reverence to God.

And then it hit me, though short lived: Imagine what our culture would look like, [Read more →]

Parents, Porn, Teenagers, and Homework - Coming to A Home Near You

newtop_01.jpgDid you know there’s porn on the internet? Yes, I know you’re probably laughing. It is almost humorous just typing this question. But, from my experience with parents, I’m not sure how “off base” that question really is. Often after events and meetings with moms and dads, I find myself asking, “Do parents understand how much porn is available online and much of it, for FREE?” With some I even wonder, “Do this mom or dad know what porn is?” So, here’s a more serious question for those same parents. And I didn’t make it up!

Did you know that 9 in 10 kids, between the ages of 8 and 16, have viewed porn online–mostly accidentally while doing homework (UK News Telegraph, NOP Research Group, 2002). [Read more →]
